Practice Slip Due:

Week of November 13th

LMS Orchestras

Practice slips are due Monday, 11/13 (100 minutes.) The practice time that students do during the week of 11/13 will be turned in when we return from Thanksgiving break on 11/27. Any practice time beyond the 100 minutes for the week of 11/13 is extra credit.

Congratulations to Heaven Gebremedhin for being selected to participate in WMEA’s Junior All State Honor Orchestra! This is a very competitive process, way to go Heaven!

This year, rather than participating in a Veteran’s Day assembly, LMS produced a video to honor our Veterans. Students watched this video during their homeroom classes on Thursday, 11/9. The 8th grade Orchestra performed “America the Beautiful” for the video and did a terrific job. Here is the link to the video for those who are interested in watching: https://youtu.be/QmnAe4ET12Y

There are a couple of Extra Credit Opportunities coming up:

Greater Palouse Youth Orchestra/Cantabile String Ensemble concert: 11/11 at 7:30 pm in the UI Administration Auditorium.

LMS Choir concert: 11/14 at 7:30 pm in the PHS Theatre.

6th graders who are interested in auditioning for the percussion parts in “Rockin’ Old St. Nick” will audition on Monday, 11/13 during class over measures 1-8.

Upcoming performances for the Orchestra students:

6th, 7th, and 8th graders will perform their “Holiday for Strings” concert on Thursday, 11/30 at 7:30 pm in the PHS Theatre. Concert dress is black pants or skirt, black hosiery, black shoes, and white collared shirt or blouse. All black dresses are also acceptable.

7th and 8th graders will perform with the PHS Orchestras for the Kiwanis Pancake breakfast on Saturday, 12/2 from 11:20-11:45 (or whenever we are finished.) Students should be at LMS by 10:50 am and go to room 806 for tuning and warm up. Students should wear their black and white concert clothing and may add festive holiday accessories if desired, such as Santa Hats, etc.

Looking ahead, we will have our Solo and Small Ensemble Festival Saturday, 2/3/18 here at LMS. Students who are interested in performing and receiving a short adjudication should speak to Mrs. Covill as soon as possible. I can help pick out music, or students may choose their own music. Our judge this year is Mrs. Giselle Hillyer, who is a private violin teacher in Moscow. This is an optional event, but is a great opportunity to perform in a small ensemble setting (or as a soloist) and receive an adjudication.

Congratulations to Nanette Erickson, Rebekah Heo, and Sunny Hu on their selection for WMEA All-State Honor Orchestra! This is a very competitive process. Way to go Nanette, Rebekah, and Sunny!

We will have combined rehearsal with the Band during zero period on Wednesday, 11/15 to work on our Full Orchestra music for the Holiday concert. Students who are in first period Orchestra, please try to attend zero period beginning at about 7:50 am that day.

Students received their order forms and information for our Butter Braid fundraiser Thursday, 11/9. Orders are due by Friday, 11/17. Butter Braids cost $12. Checks may be made payable to PHS. Orders will be delivered Monday, 12/4.

Extra credit opportunity:

Greater Palouse Youth Orchestra/Cantabile String Ensemble concert: 11/11 at 7:30 pm in the UI Administration Auditorium.

The Blue Orchestra will attend the WSU Orchestra Festival Friday, 11/17. We will leave PHS at 7:15 am and return at approximately 11:45 am. We perform at 8:00 am in the recital hall at Kimbrough Music building. Please come listen if you are able! Students need to bring their instrument, music, end pin holder, and money for lunch or a sack lunch. I need a parent with an SUV or van to help us transport cellos and basses. Please let me know if you are available to help with this.

Our Holiday concert (PHS Bands and Orchestras) will be Wednesday, 12/6 at 7:00 pm in the PHS Theatre. This year we will only do one performance because the Choirs are having their own separate concert this year.

The PHS Orchestras will also perform with the Elementary students for their holiday concert on Wednesday, 12/13 at 7:30 pm in the LMS Gym.

We will sell trees for the PHS Boosters on Thursday, 12/14 from 4:00-6:00 pm. I will have a sign up sheet for students in class next week. I will also need four parents (two for each hour) to help with this, as I have another commitment that evening.
